BESCOM Empanelled

An off-grid solar system in Bangalore operates entirely independently of the BESCOM electricity grid. Solar panels charge a battery bank during the day; the battery powers your home through the night and on cloudy days. There is no BESCOM connection required — making off-grid the right solution for locations with very frequent power cuts, agricultural land, farmhouses, remote sites, or locations where obtaining a grid connection is expensive or impractical. Pratham Solar designs and installs off-grid systems from 1kW to 100kW across Karnataka.

When Off-Grid is the Right Choice

Frequent or long power cuts

Areas with 6–8+ hours of daily outages where an on-grid system would be unusable for most of the day.

Agricultural land / farmhouses

Irrigation pumps, security lighting, and basic amenities on land far from the nearest transformer.

Remote and construction sites

Temporary or permanent power where grid extension would cost more than the solar system itself.

No BESCOM connection available

New plots, rural properties, or locations where BESCOM connection wait times are prohibitive.

Battery Technology Comparison

The battery bank is the most important component in an off-grid system. Pratham Solar recommends LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) for new installations — the long cycle life and deeper discharge capability make it the superior choice over a 10-year horizon, despite the higher upfront cost.

Tubular Lead-Acid

  • Cost: ₹8,000–12,000/kWh
  • Life: 4–6 years
  • Depth: 50% DoD
  • Maintenance: Monthly water top-up

VRLA (Sealed)

  • Cost: ₹10,000–15,000/kWh
  • Life: 3–5 years
  • Depth: 50% DoD
  • Maintenance: Maintenance-free
Recommended

LiFePO4 Lithium

  • Cost: ₹25,000–40,000/kWh
  • Life: 10+ years
  • Depth: 80–90% DoD
  • Maintenance: Zero maintenance

Off-Grid System Components

Solar Panels

Higher capacity than on-grid — panels must charge batteries AND run loads simultaneously. Adani, Waaree, or Topcon N-type.

MPPT Charge Controller

Maximum Power Point Tracking controller manages the charging of the battery bank from the solar panels safely and efficiently.

Battery Bank

LiFePO4 recommended for new systems. Sized based on daily load (kWh) and desired days of autonomy (typically 1–2 days).

Off-Grid Inverter

Pure sine wave inverter draws power from the battery bank and converts to 230V AC. No BESCOM connection required.

BMS (Battery Management System)

Protects LiFePO4 battery from overcharge, deep discharge, and thermal runaway. Essential for lithium battery systems.

Load Analysis & Sizing

Pratham Solar conducts a detailed load analysis before designing — listing all appliances, wattage, and hours of use — to size the system accurately.

Be Aware: Off-Grid Limitations

Pratham Solar believes in full transparency. Off-grid suits specific use cases but is not the right choice for every situation:

Higher upfront cost

Batteries add 40–60% to system cost compared to an equivalent on-grid system. A 3kW off-grid system costs ₹3–7 lakhs vs ₹1.2–1.6 lakhs for on-grid.

Battery replacement

Lead-acid batteries need replacing every 4–6 years (₹30,000–60,000). LiFePO4 lasts 10+ years but costs more upfront.

No BESCOM export credits

Off-grid systems cannot feed power back to BESCOM. There are no net metering benefits or PM Surya Ghar subsidy.

Sizing is critical

An undersized battery bank will run flat during consecutive cloudy days. Accurate load analysis is essential — Pratham Solar does this before quoting.

Need backup during power cuts but have a grid connection?

A Hybrid Solar system gives you grid connection benefits (net metering, lower cost) AND battery backup — the best of both worlds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an off-grid solar system?
An off-grid system operates entirely independently of the electricity grid. Solar panels charge a battery bank during the day; the battery powers your home at night and on cloudy days. No BESCOM connection is needed. It is the right choice for locations with unreliable or absent grid supply.
How many batteries do I need for an off-grid system?
It depends on your daily consumption and how many hours of backup you need. For a home using 10 units/day wanting 1 day of backup: approximately 20kWh of battery capacity. Pratham Solar designs the system based on your actual load after a site assessment.
What is the cost of an off-grid solar system in Bangalore?
A basic 3kW off-grid system with lead-acid batteries costs ₹3–4 lakhs. With LiFePO4 batteries, ₹5–7 lakhs. The higher upfront cost is offset by complete independence from BESCOM and no monthly electricity bills.
Is off-grid solar eligible for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?
No. The PM Surya Ghar subsidy applies only to grid-connected on-grid systems. Off-grid systems are not eligible.
Can I add batteries to my existing on-grid system?
Not directly — on-grid inverters cannot charge batteries. You would need to replace the inverter with a hybrid inverter that handles both grid connection and battery charging. Pratham Solar can assess your existing system and recommend the most cost-effective upgrade path.
